October 12, 2009 Dr. Wexler recently attended the Illinois Optometric Association's annual conference, October 8-11, 2009, in Itasca, Illinois. The conference offered continuing education courses on Innovative Products, Ocular Infection management, Ocular Surface Disease, Medical Eye care and Coding, New Technologies in AMD, Posterior Segment and Refractive Surgery. June 2009 Dr. Wexler traveled Italy and France for several weeks touring Paris, Rome, Venice, Florence, and Pisa. Much of the trip was dedicated to leisure and relaxation but some of it was allocated for investigating high tech eye care instrumentation in the City of Rome. Dr. Wexler's interest in digital image testing of the front of the eye led to his discovery of an extremely small hand held digital macro-camera. He was so impressed at the portability, compact size, and its extreme high resolution, that he ordered the unit from the Italian distributor and brought it back to the States. Today, he uses the high tech camera to take digital images of eye health conditions located in the front of the eyes, ex) eyelids, lashes, cornea, iris, and conjunctiva. He displays the digital images on a medical monitor for educating his patients about their eyes. Patients see more and learn more with the use of the new camera. The patients' images are then stored in the office computer system for future access. January 2009 Dr. Wexler completed a 12 hour Oral Therapeutics course and passed the required examination held at the Illinois College of Optometry that allows him licensure for prescribing and using oral pharmaceutical agents.
June 2008 Dr. Wexler and his family took a cruise on the Carnival Fascination ship in the Caribbean. The entire adventure was exciting. Our two daughters had a blast! One of the highlights was snorkeling off the coast of Cozumel Mexico. If you ever get a chance to go to Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Restaurant in Key West and want a frozen margarita, just know that they serve them from a machine pre-made.
February 26-28, 2008 Our 2008 National Academy of Vision meetings presented by Wal-Mart Inc. was held in Nashville, TN at the famous Gaylord Opryland Resort Hotel and Convention Center. Dr. Wexler attended these important meetings and Continuing Education seminars from highly respected doctors in the field of eye care. In addition, the Wal-Mart affiliated Optometrists were presented with Wal-Mart's future plans for making eye and vision care even better in all the Wal-Mart Vision Centers nationwide. This exciting news was well received by Optometrists and certainly Dr. Wexler as he understands these changes and strategies will positively impact all his patients by creating an even better office visit experience. Stay tuned!

October 30, 2007 Dr. Wexler was invited to attend Abbott Laboratories Halloween Party sponsored by the PPD division. This was a well planned and enormously successful party enjoyed by the children of the employees of Abbott as well as the employees themselves. On board there were "haunted floors" for the kids to trick-or-treat on, great food, a fantastic DJ pumped out music, teens played with a DDR unit (Dance-Dance Revolution!) , a professional photographer took photos of families, tatoo artists and face painters turned ordinary kids into crazy cats, there were challenging games and a whole lot more. Abbott, thanks a lot! And, hats off to all the hard working employees who made the event such a success!

August 23-25, 2007: Dr. Wexler Attended a four-day seminar on August 23-25, 2007 in Dallas, TX conducted by the famous Zigler Corporation (Ziglar.com) and himself, the true legend in leadership training and development, Mr. Zig Ziglar. It was the final run of their 30 year seminar called "Born To Win". (http://www.ziglaronline.com/development-seminar.htm)
This famous personal growth and development seminar taught the large group of hundreds the concepts and skills necessary for making yourself not just good, but way better than good! Their trained specialists and motivational speakers and personal facilitators helped the attendees fully understand and implement Born To Win concepts so as to become difference makers in their families, communities, and their companies. It's about being better...
For over 50 years Zig hascrafted, perfected and lived his belief that "you can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want." And Dr. Wexler believes in Mr. Ziglar's philosophy. Some years ago, Dr. Wexler aptly named his practice corporation, Goodworks Eyecare, LTD. and holds tight that if you do good, it works! In other words, if you do good for others, only good can come about from it!

Joe Dunn 552 S. Washington St. #119 Naperville, IL 60540
Honorable Representative Joe Dunn:
Please support HB1366 Orals Legislation bill. Optometrists are primary care providers who have complete ability and competence to carefully prescribe specific oral medications when indicated. In the State of Missouri where I had practiced in 1992-1993, (I have lived in Naperville for almost a decade but since moved to the northern suburbs) optometrists are licensed to prescribe specific oral pharmaceuticals. In Missouri, I routinely prescribed orals such as those to treat eye infections and inflammation without any issues. There are now forty states that license optometrist to prescribe orals!
* I prescribed orals responsibly because I was trained to prescribe orals responsibly.
My prescribing privilege had a tremendous impact on my patients’ quality of care they received from me. For way too long, the general public in Illinois has been restricted from receiving the full benefit of optometrists’ knowledge and training. Optometrists are total primary eye care providers fully trained in the pharmaceutical management of ocular disease via not only topical but also ORAL medications. This has been the reality for almost the last two decades.
For the last decade in Illinois, optometrists have had an impeccable safety track record for responsible and ethical prescribing practice of topical pharmaceuticals contrary to what the incredulous ophthalmologic community predicted to happen as they fought diligently to stop topical pharmaceutical agent prescribing privileges for optometrists years ago.
* Optometrists continue to prescribe topical pharmaceuticals responsibly because we were trained to prescribe topicals responsibly.
Now is the time for you to continue to make a positive impact on our health care system and for the people of Illinois by voting YES to HB1366. Trust in your optometric eye care professionals for continuing to serve the public competently and responsibly. The time is now!
Most Gratefully,
Steven M. Wexler, O.D.
The Orals Bill was signed into law recently and will be effective sometime in early 2008. What that means for our patients is that Dr. Wexler will soon become certified to prescribe specific oral medications for the treatment and management of eye diseases in the State of Illinois further expanding his scope of practice for the community of Waukegan. Stay tuned!
